Stage 2 of Spiritual Growth is Wisdom

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your Faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” – James 1:2-5

3. Wisdom

Gods ultimate goal for every member of His Kingdom is Wisdom. As we come to stage 3 of our process for Growth we kind of come full circle. Trials bring a necessary season to seek wisdom from God. And trials produce patience to depend on and grow our Faith in God. We often don’t know we need wisdom until our time of difficulty. Once in a time of trial, we need to know if a particular trial is something God wants us to eliminate by Faith or Persevere in Faith. This requires wisdom. During this time we need wisdom more than we need knowledge. Knowledge is raw information but wisdom knows how to use it. Someone once said that knowledge is the ability to take things apart, but wisdom is the ability to put things together.

If you need wisdom: pertains to proper knowledge of the Word of God

ask our generous God: the Lord gives to those who ask, providing they ask for the right things. A greater knowledge of the Word of God is always the right thing.

He will not rebuke you for asking: Knowing God’s generosity – that He never despises or resents us for asking for wisdom – should encourage us to ask Him often. We understand that He is the God of the open hand, not the God of the clenched fist.

“We are all so ready to go to books, to go to men, to go to ceremonies, to anything except to God. . . . Consequently, the text does not say, ‘Let him ask books,’ nor ‘ask priests,’ but, ‘let him ask of God.’” -(Charles Spurgeon)

When we want wisdom, the place to begin and end is the Bible. True wisdom will always be consistent with the Word of God. We should be aware that asking for wisdom might get us a vigorous dose of trials that demand a lot of Patience. But if we let the process work, we will eventually get the Wisdom we need.

Conclusion

I hope you have enjoyed this 3 part series on spiritual growth and let the process of your difficult situation take hold and grow you spiritually and closer to God. God sometimes answers prayers in an unusual way. One of my continual prayers is spiritual growth, God whispered “this is it” while I was reading something one day that took me to James 1:4. I don’t remember how I got there but I did. I don’t consider this prayer complete as we can never get to close to God in this world.
